A laid-off factory worker who was convicted of subversion after leading a protest last year in China's industrial northeast has been refused parole on medical grounds despite being in "alarming physical condition," a human rights group said Saturday.

"Family members recently visited the two men ... and found them in alarming physical condition," Human Rights in China said in a statement faxed to reporters. It said both men were kept in isolation and other prisoners were not allowed to talk to them.
